How to : Port Security in Cisco switches

Cisco Port security is an important feature to most of my customer. Especially Software development companies and BPOs are the constant customer types asking for this feature to restrict devices connecting to their network.

Cisco Port security is to limit the devices that are connecting to the Wired network via switches. This feature checks for MAC address of the device that has just accessed the switch port and verifies whether that device is allowed to connect wired network or not. The wireless equivalent of this feature is MAC address Authentication. The number of addresses the feature accepts is equivalent to the maximum limit of MAC address of the switch.

Windows 8 Logo

Six Months after the Launch of Windows 8 Consumer version, Microsoft has released End user training document for Windows 8. May be Steven Sinofsky thought windows 8 users don’t want a end user manual. But Launch of third party apps like Classic shell, Pokki, IOBitStart8, which is a software to bring back classy start menu back to your windows 8 installation or Boot2Desktop may have melted Microsoft’s vision. MS has started to understand its not good for company to remove much expected features in Windows 8 and of course every software needs a README.DOC (Even Windows 1.1 had it)

This can be downloaded online, Link given below. Its in PDF format, you need a PDF reader to read this (Windows 8 comes with a “Reader” inbuilt)

Manage packages with yum behind proxy

Today I tried to update a student’s Fedora Core 13 PC and install netbeans via yum at Anna University, Trichy, Where we are doing IP Tele project. But yum fails to retrieve packages from repository. Soon I found the PC is behind a proxy [Squid]. So I did some search over Google and found the below which may be useful to you at times.

Yum try to access the network repositories by using HTTP1.0 protocol by default. The squid we use can provide the HTTP1.0 proxy. So configuring yum to pass through the squid as follows worked.

To configure to a single user.

If you are not a Super user and wants to use yum then set an environment variable http_proxy to direct the yum to use the proxy. You can also set ftp_proxy, socks_proxy variable to use the yum with it. The value for the http proxy is like this http://user:password@host:3128

export http_proxy=”http://karthik:karthik123@10.1.1.1:3128″

This will work to the current user only. If you sudo then the proxy setting will be lost.

To configure globally

To configure the yum to use the proxy server login into super user account and edit yum.conf

/etc/yum.conf

Then enter the following information.

#Proxy Server address
proxy=http://proxyhost.com:3128

# Username and password if provided to your server
proxy_username=karthik
proxy_password=karthik123
